While Mercedes Benz’s 4Matic all-wheel drive models are incredibly popular in the U.S., as its sells a greater percentage of 4Matic models in the U.S. than any other country. Now, the automaker is aiming to increase the popularity of its 4Matic models globally. With high gas prices, many people are dropping SUVs and moving back to sedans,”but don’t want to lose the security” that AWD systems offer.
“Through the years we’ve seen more and more people come to 4Matic (and four-wheel drive generally) as the new systems become lighter, more fuel-efficient, more space efficient, offer better dynamics and comfort, provide more technological sophisticiation, and the cost differential is more modest,” said Donna Boland, a Mercedes-Benz spokeswoman.
Mercedes’ U.S. lineup features the 4Matic system on seven lines, with some models, such as the R class, the system is standard. 4Matic is offered on 18 models in total. Last year, Mercedes sold 98,252 4Matic unit in the U.S., 39.6 percent of its U.S. sales. Mercedes Benz will try to increase global sales of its 4Matic vehicles by making the system available in more models and in more markets.
