The second-generation Mercedes-Benz SLK 350 roadster was first seen for 2005 as a powerful, faster, and bolder-looking replacement for the ground-breaking original, which was the first production roadster with a folding metal hardtop. A less-powerful and less-expensive version, the SLK 280, is brand-new for 2006.
The new base SLK 280 comes powered by a 3.0-liter twin-cam V6 engine that generates 228 hp. The SLK 350 continues with its 268-hp 3.5-liter V6. A standard six-speed manual transmission drives the rear wheels on the SLK 280 and 350, and a seven-speed automatic with manual-shift capability is optional.
Mercedes-Benz has created the perfect vehicle. Superb quality, gorgeous looks, supercar performance and at the touch of a button it becomes a convertible. The V8 engine from the SL500 has been heavily modified by AMG resulting in a near 50% increase in power. This is enough to propel the SL55 to over 200mph with the speed restrictor removed.
Braking is excellent thanks to 8-pot vented discs and ESP brake by wire technology, while the SL55 becomes the first Mercedes to feature pushbutton sequential gear shift. Handling is assisted by state of the art active body control, however it still struggles to cope with the car’s enormous 2 ton mass.
When 617 horsepower and 0-to-60 mph in 3.8 seconds just isn’t fast enough for someone, take a lesson from Mercedes-Benz and simply add more power. Enter the SLR McLaren 722 Edition that packs 33 more horsepower for a grand total of 650, and a 0-to-60-mph time of 3.6 seconds, two-tenths quicker than the standard SLR.
Maximum speed is also bumped from 208 mph to 209 mph, which required improved stability through a modified front spoiler and rear diffuser. Elsewhere, the 722 adds a stiffer dampening suspension, drops 10 millimeters over the new 19-inch alloy wheels that conceal the 20-millimeter-larger brake rotors. Mercedes says the interior has a “thoroughbred racing touch” with carbon trim and leather-and-Alcantara upholstery.
