Mercedes has reached new heights as the 500,000th SLK compact roadster was delivered since its release in 1996. Over 310,000 consumers chose the model directly from the first generation. When the successor of the SLK was released in March of 2004 it sold over 190,000 units.
“With the launch of the SLK in 1996, Mercedes-Benz successfully established the premium segment for compact roadsters. Thanks to innovative technology such as the vario-roof and the neck-level heating system AIRSCARF, the SLK has long been recognized as a cult car of modern times,” expains Dr. Klaus Maier, Executive Vice President Mercedes-Benz Cars, responsible for Sales and Marketing. “The new-generation SLK models, which we are delivering to customers since April 2008, are sportier than ever. I’m confident that the dynamic looks and performance of the new SLK will again set pulses racing among sports cars enthusiasts around the world.”
The second-generation Mercedes-Benz SLK 350 roadster was first seen for 2005 as a powerful, faster, and bolder-looking replacement for the ground-breaking original, which was the first production roadster with a folding metal hardtop. A less-powerful and less-expensive version, the SLK 280, is brand-new for 2006.
The new base SLK 280 comes powered by a 3.0-liter twin-cam V6 engine that generates 228 hp. The SLK 350 continues with its 268-hp 3.5-liter V6. A standard six-speed manual transmission drives the rear wheels on the SLK 280 and 350, and a seven-speed automatic with manual-shift capability is optional.
If a particular model of vehicle makes it 10 years without once being renamed, redone or replaced it’s a bit of a surprise these days. The longevity is what makes the 50th anniversary model of the Mercedes-Benz SL550 so unique and impressive. The 2007 model of the SL Roadster will mark the fiftieth anniversary since the cars first rolled of the line and into the hearts of car lovers with the 300SL.
The 50th anniversary model will only be available in limited numbers, and it will be packed full of luxurious features. A 5.5 liter, 382 horsepower V-8 moves it down the road without too much effort, and Brake Assist, ESP and hydraulic brakes to stop when you want to stop.
